Hydroponic Garden

Photos will be added later.

I've always wanted to have a vegetable garden, however I live in an apartment with no room for a garden, and I have an unstoppable cat who will chew and dig up every plant in the house. Because of this, I had to get creative.

What are hydroponics?

Hydroponics are a way of growing vegetables with water and nutrients only. Unlike a traditional garden, there's no dirt or soil used.

Hydroponics are usually grown indoors using plant lights. Because of that, depending on your room, they can be temperature regulated and grow year round. Because of that flexibility I thought it would be a good way to have my little garden indoors and safe from my cat.

My setup

After a lot of research I decided to go with this 3d printed vertical tower atop a 2 gallon bucket. The tower has a hose that can be attachrd to a water pump. When the pump is on, water will be pulled to the top of the grow tower and fall back down, watering the plants.

I couldn't leave it as is because of my menace of a cat, so I'm placing the grow tower inside of an ikea Baggebo display.

For the lighting I decided to just zip tie some LED grow lights to the corners of the cabinet. Now we have everything set up to start growing!

What I'm growing

As mentioned I'm going to grow vegetables. Since I can fit 12 plants, I'm starting with 5 Black seed lettuce, 4 Forellenschluss lettuce, 2 brimmer tomatoes and 1 cucumber plant. I bought all of my seeds from rareseeds.com.

Next up, I have to get the seeds started. I'm using a paper towel inside of a zip lock bag. The seeds will spend 5 days here getting a daily misting. Once they sprout, I'll transplant them to the grow tower and get it running.
